War is raging, inflation is up, Republicans continue to act with no accountability and oversight. We see more and more data showing that young people have lost any belief in what we used to call the American dream and it’s clear that the current Administration and elected members of Congress don’t care at all. In fact, they smear them daily and look down on most as lazy. So many are fed up and young people are especially struggling as the face an uncertain future and feel powerless in the face of the chaos. Fred sits down with Laura Brill a successful litigator and founder of the Civics Center driven by desire to empower high school students to become involved in our politics and take charge of their power. Brill is a founding partner of one of Los Angeles’ premier litigation boutiques, a leader in getting young people voting and engaged in civic life, the lawyer who secured the courtroom win to get an L.A. County policing reform initiative placed on the November ballot where it was overwhelmingly approved by voters, and an effective advocate for LGBTQ rights. Troubled by political attacks on democratic institutions during the 2016 elections, Brill began writing and advocating for young people to pre-register to vote before their 18th birthdays. In 2018, she founded a nonprofit organization, The Civics Center, to educate teens about civics and voter preregistration and help them conduct high school voter registration drives.
