Dale Earnhardt Jr. gets a true look into the inner-workings of NASCAR when he sits down with longtime crew chief and official Robin Pemberton. After growing up in New York near the short track racing stronghold Albany-Saratoga, Robin would become intertwined with the grassroots foundation of NASCAR through modified standouts like Jerry Cook and Pete Hamilton. It was through Hamilton and childhood friend Steve Hmiel that Robin made the acquaintance of NASCAR royalty, King Richard Petty. Hmiel would eventually travel south and take a job at Petty Enterprises, and when it was time to take Kyle Petty full-time racing in 1979, he made the call to Robin to join the team. Robin described the shop and team as a great learning experience, and he quickly rose from “holding the dumb end of the tape measure” to being a co-crew chief for the King himself in 1983. Robin would move to teams like RahMoc and DiGard before getting a call from Jack Roush to be part of his burgeoning NASCAR operation. After a hasty start-up, Robin found himself atop Mark Martin’s pit box in 1988, and the team would go on to have great success, nearly winning the 1990 championship. After leaving Roush, Robin had a long stint with Rusty Wallace at Penske before moving into managerial roles with Petty Enterprises and Ford. Robin would leave one end of the racing spectrum for the other when he took the position of Vice President of Competition for NASCAR. While in this position, Robin had to rule over some vast changes to the sport and some of the stiffest penalties in NASCAR history.
